Positive Behavioural Support

Improving quality of life and reducing behaviours that challenge since 1999. We work with children and adults, including those with learning disabilities, autism, ADHD and FASD. Our services include function-based behavioural intervention, training and supervising PBS practitioners, embedding PBS in organisations and upskilling care providers in the area of post-incident staff support.

Behavioural intervention

We specialise in behaviours that challenge, such as aggression and self-injury. Our approach is all about increasing skill-sets. We use behavioural science to teach people communication and coping skills that replace behaviours that challenge, and we teach carers interaction styles that reduce motivation to display such behaviour in the first place.

Upskilling others

A local authority wanted to develop a team of practitioners that would design PBS interventions for typically developing young people and their families. We provided training on assessment methods and behavioural intervention, followed by monthly group supervision.

Post-incident support for staff

In services for people whose behaviours challenge, delivering the right support in the hours and weeks following a critical incident can increase resilience and prevent burnout in support workers.

Following Nick’s involvement in research carried out by the Tizard Centre, BBCC created its 3-step Post-incident Support Package, which develops a care provider’s in-house capability to maintain well-being in staff who experience incidents of challenging behaviour.

Setting-wide PBS

In a previous role, Nick took part in a study on Setting-Wide PBS. Services which received the model saw a decrease in challenging behaviour of over 50% compared with services that did not.

Nick helped embed the Setting Wide PBS model in an organisation that supports 3500 people with learning disabilities and autism. Nick worked strategically with department heads, and oversaw the design and implementation of a Train the Trainer course which equipped 5000 front line staff with foundational PBS skills.
